Overview

Ran (Rán) is a goddess associated with the sea. She is known as the wife of Aegir, the giant who rules over the ocean. Together, they have nine daughters, who personify the waves.

Ran’s husband, Aegir is also associated with the sea and is known for hosting feasts for the gods. Together, they embody the complexities of the ocean.

Ran has a particular role in the mythology as she is said to use her net to capture sailors who venture too far out to sea and drown them. Because of this, seafarers would sometimes offer sacrifices to her in hopes of gaining her favor and ensuring safe passage.

Ran’s character embodies the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the sea, reflecting both its life-sustaining qualities and its potential for destruction. Her myths underscore the respect and fear the Norse had for the ocean, which was central to their way of life.
