Overview

Mani (Máni) is the god who personifies the Moon. He is the brother of Sol, the Sun goddess, and like her, he is the child of Mundilfari.

Mani is responsible for guiding the moon across the sky each night, a task he performs from his chariot.

Mani is pursued by a wolf named Hati, similar to Skoll pursuing Sol. This pursuit is part of the mythological explanations for the moon’s movement and phases. The relentless chase of the celestial bodies by wolves reflects the Norse understanding of the cyclical nature of time and the cosmos, where order is constantly threatened by chaos.

Mani’s role, though not as extensively detailed in surviving myths, highlights the importance of the moon’s cycles for tracking time and influencing natural events, which were crucial to Norse culture and agricultural practices.

Mani along with Sol represents the balance between day and night, light and dark, which is a recurring theme in Norse cosmology.
